Porcupine Quill Embroidery

Porcupine quill decoration has become a nearly lost art. Join us to explore the ancient techniques of fine quillwork while using beautifully dyed as well as natural quills. After an examination of the necessary tools and stitches, students will learn several basic techniques enabling them to create beautiful artwork of their own. Quilled designs will be sewn onto traditionally tanned buckskin, replicating the process of long ago. Students will work on pieces to apply to medicines pouches, knife sheaths, hair barrettes, or small projects of their own design. Also covered will be information on quill preparation, sorting, and dyeing as well as some advanced techniques to consider for later projects. We hope you will join us to rekindle an understanding of this ancient art.
